J.EDGAR

This Clint Eastwood film starring the amazingly talented Leonardo Dicaprio is one of the few Historic Figure films that is not praised by critics. My opinion differs from others but even though i admire Clint Eastwood does not affect my opinion in any way at all. In my opinion J.Edgar was one film that was inspiring and very informative, packed with emotional and historical drama when needed. Getting to the point i enjoyed this film, many complained of its rough story line and its time frame jumping such as going from J Edgar in his twenties coherently switching back and forth from there to his life as an old man in office. This was not a problem for me because unlike others when i pay attention to a movie most of the time it actually intrigues me because of the way i interpret it. Going into it the plot for this historical drama is as follows. Leo Dicaprio plays One of history's most powerful menJ. Edgar Hoover . Edgar works in the F.B.I while in his early twenties and gets his ability to show his potential when communists detonate multiple bombs in the homes of government officials. Edgar uses this to his advantage and shows that he is independent and he conducts investigations on suspects and ultimately gets his man. Edgar is also one of the smartest men in his bureau and is not liked by many woman. Edgar however takes a liking to a new secretary Helen Gandy(Naomi Watts) and when he is rejected by Ms.Gandy for the purpose of her work coming first, Edgar quickly appoints Ms. Gandy as his personal secretary. Edgar manages to build the F.B.I into what is today and stood in office as the face of law enforcement for nearly 50 years. Throughout the film the timeline jumps from Edgar's young years periodically to his Senior years in office. We are able to uncover that Edgar was very powerful, he kept files on every political person he felt he could blackmail, Edgar is gay, and Edgar in no way wanted the public to know this about him because it would have soiled his political reputation. Judi Dench plays Edgar's mother in the film and is with Edgar during his younger years in office. The film goes on about Edgar's harassment of political figures and his personal life as a homosexual. The part about Edgar being homosexual did not change my opinion of him one bit through the film. I am a mature critic and understand that if the actor has to play someone that was gay it is not that the actor likes that stuff it is just that the person that is being portrayed just so happened to be gay. I enjoyed the film alot and thought Dicaprio was stunning and deserves to win an Oscar for his performance. My favorite scene in this film is the scene in which Edgar is crying about his dead mother and even though he was dressed up as her and wearing her beads to remember what she was like, the scene was so powerful, inspirational and moving that i nearly heard Dicaprio's name being called up for the Oscar. Clint Eastwood made a comeback from his last mediocre film Hereafter and i cannot wait to see what he dishes out next. J. Edgar is phenomenal and i reccomend it to fans of Eastwood, Dicaprio, or just historical figure films.
